Hi everyone! Since we have talking about MySpace.com very often lately, I'm beginning this discussion about it.MySpace is really cool. It has let me catch up with some of my friends from high school and it has fun features like music, page comments, blogs, and pictures.
But... (you knew there was a "but" coming, didn't you? haha)... like everywhere else on the Internet, you must be cautious because many people are not who they claim to be. Most of those people are harmless, but some of them DO mean you harm. It's difficult, if not impossible, to tell the difference right away; don't give out personal information! (
Here are some tips about safety.)
MySpace has more celebrity and musician impersonators than any other site I've seen. It has so many that I just assume it's an impersonator until I find out different. Most of these pages were just put up by fans because their favorite person/band didn't have a page, but many of them actually pretend to be the celebrity or musician. Please do not take the celebrity/band pages at face value, if you have contact with them.
There are clues that can help you figure out if the page is the real deal. 1) If you can find an official site on a search engine, but the site is not linked on the MySpace page, that is a bad sign.
2) Go to the person or band's official website and see if MySpace is referenced on there. You can also email the site's webmaster to ask. If someone IS impersonating them on MySpace, they usually are grateful to know anyway.
3) Google the celebrity's name along with "myspace" and see if any
trustworthy mentions pop up. (Put quotation marks around the name for a better match.) Many celebrities and bands, like Jon Lovitz and Carson Daly and JPL, mention MySpace in public, and sometimes you can see that in news reports.
4) Use common sense. If George Clooney is busy filming a movie in the middle of the Sahara Desert, he probably isn't commenting on your page on MySpace.
If you can't find enough clues to figure it out, please just use caution.
