Have you got the single yet? If so, which song do you like better and why?
I think I like Man Like Me better, but I'm probably influenced by the fact that I heard jon sing it in concert, and he sang it so beautifully. I like the lyrics better too, I think. Not so sure about the lalalas, but it's a really nice song.
I'm gonna go with If I Go Away... Man Like Me is growing on me, but I still like the other one more... I'm sure that Man Like Me would sound better in concert though...
I think that for me the 'Lalalalalas' in Man Like Me keep me from liking it more... They distract me, but I'm sure it sounds a LOT better live... And I'm odd about stuff like that cuz I prefer live music...
I reaaaaally want to hear the full version of Man Like Me, because I have a feeling it will be my favorite. :-( I wish I could order the single, but I'm not aloud.
I love both of these songs for different reasons, so this is a difficult choice. "If I Go Away" is so very even and coherent. The melody is solid and Jon sounds great on it. So it really has everything going for it. I think all the accompaniment is very skillfully arranged and performed, especially the descending piano notes--they make me really envision falling leaves.
But "Man Like Me" is compelling. Jon's voice is absolutely perfect on it. I have always thought he especially excelled at the low notes, and "Man Like Me" has plenty of low notes. Because it is a slower song, it showcases his voice more, and I really appreciate that. I also like the inversions of syntax in the lyrics. It starts "Never is a word you've spoken that I long to hear. Never gonna leave my side." Then later, "Better is a word I whisper softly in your ear." The way those sentences are constructed emphasizes the words "never" and "better." Generally, in a love song, we wouldn't expect "never" to be a positive word. He longs to hear the word never??? That immediately attracts our interest because it is unexpected. The guitar in the song is grand too. The opening bars are most wonderful.
I hadn't planned on confessing this, but Jill and jolie, I am blaming y'all, OK? I am not fond of the lalalas. The very last three are lovely because his voice is less altered on those. The last three have a fitting echo on them and give the song an effective ethereal quality, but the earlier ones jar with the rest of the song to me.
So watch. I bet Jon will wind up being the one who wanted those lalas done like that. He probably thought they sounded really cool. But I will say this. They are less distracting the more I listen, kind of like the back-up singers on "Turn To Grey."
So........... drumroll please.......time for me to stop jabbering and CHOOSE ALREADY!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I choose "Man Like Me" since Jon's voice contains more emotion on that song, and I can hear all the nuance and depth of his voice. It sounds spendid in concert too. "Man Like Me" is a sparkling gem.

Hi everyone! I miss you all and I was just looking back at the posts number/dates and can't believe that it's been almost three years since the postings on the Idol boards. Miss you all and I'm not yet ready to pick one of the two songs but when I'm ready, I will come and post my pick.
Aww, too many good and fond memories.. I'm just remembering our late night chats about guys and Walmart! LOL I'm also remembering the online wedding that was thrown over on the Idol board and the story that involved soap stars, do you remember that?
And about which song, hmm.. I can't decide. I like them both.

I think Man Like Me is very radio worthy, but it might fit better on an easy listening station. It's also the sort of thing an R&B singer could sing and it would fit on one of those stations. Jon just doesn't have an R&B voice. Most of his new music that you all haven't heard almost sounds like classic rock. It's very fun, very danceable, with great hooks.
Hi Razz! I look forward to hearing which song you choose.
I could easily see "Man Like Me" on an Adult Contemporary station or Hot Adult Contemporary station. Any station with "Mix" in its title would be perfect for this song too. Then, once it succeeds there, it could easily move to lite rock stations too. It has a John Mayer sound, and his stuff is played on those types of stations and all over, really. But I have actually been surprised lately by how many slower, more melodic songs have been playing on my top 40 station.
But I do think that "If I Go Away" probably has a bit of an edge as far as radio play goes, though both could do well on radio.

It's too hard to choose because the songs are so different. Jon's voice sounds gorgeous on "Man Like Me". "If I Go Away" is very catchy and I love it as well.
I agree with Betts in that alot of the new stuff sounds radio-ready. Especially "Boy Next Door" and "Gypsey Queen". Those are probably my two faves right now, but I love 'em all!!
