Ice caps melting. Food shortages. Over population. Its a very contraversial subject... so yeah. What are your views? (I'll post mine tomorow... but for now, I need sleep)

I have read some things about the ice caps melting. I think that is a bit scary, to say the least. Not sure what we can do about it though that would really make a difference. The Earth has gone through many cycles, even before man began destroying it. I do think, however, that we need to quit chopping away at the rain forests. That might help.
Where's Iris?

The thing about Global Warming is that there really isn't anything that we can do now to stop it... The only things we can try to do, will (if everyone does them) slow it down.. But the human race seems to not notice how bad they are making things until it is too late... All the businesses that are now going 'green' should have started that long ago, but they were too worried about making the other 'green'
I think it would take me days to verbalize my thoughts and another few days to properly (politically correctly) that is, to write them out. I guess I could start with the food shortages. Not sure if this is what is meant by that but I guess it all relates with pollution etc. I've read some on soil shortages. Theres a huge shortage of good soil to grow our food in. Our soil needs time to reconstitude itself and the old practice of alternating growing fields from season to season is being shortened or eliminated all together. To compensate chemicals are dumped into the soil to make it ready to grow crops. It scares me to think of what is in the food yet it seems hopeless sometimes to think too much on it.
I'm scared to eat a chicken lately with the thought of the antibotics. Going vegan seems like a good idea yet that also carries with it concerns.
Global warming I'm not informed enough or convinced enough to choose a side. I do see evidence of both sides. I do think it has been going on for a long time, without our help. Are we making it worse? Absolutely, which also brings up the topic of overpopulation, which I think I'll leave that subject alone for the moment.
I think God is the creator of this planet and he most definitely has things under control. However he has made us keepers of the planet and he gave us free will. We are responsible to care for the planet to the best of our ability. How to do that is now being taught a little more then when I was growing up. There is a shift of consciousness that is occuring, about many things. Is it too late?????? Or have we only just begin to see our potential in this world? Well I'm done for today, I'll jump in more later--good topic Sheepgirl. I think writing out these thoughts help to firm them up a little. And reading others thoughts are always helpful learning tools as well.
I think Global Warming goes along with everything else like food and wildfires as mentioned above.
I believe in it completely. I mean... sure it IS a natural process of earth (every so many thousands of years the earth cools up... heats down... on and on and on) but research has proven that over just the past 50 some years... population growth has increased emormousely, ice caps melting at scary rates, technology is goin crazy with new stuff, ect.
I think all of that is realated to global warming in some way. We are losing land with the melting poles... so the growing population has is only lossing places to live. I mean... they ARE builing all these new housing developements. (Well, at least thats the situation where I live. Over the past 5 years, theres been at LEAST 15 new housing developemts popping up. Is this the case with everyone else's areas?) But they are building these houses (AND businesses) in woods or fields. Therefore we are losing food and trees which provide oxygen.
Another thing kinda along the same lines of less food is this... even if we still DO have fields, they wont last for too much longer. This is where the technology comes in. Cell phones cause radiation. Which causes radiation which causes brain tumors/cancer (if used exesivly) AND it is killing the bees!! Without those little guys, there is no cross polinating! With means a LOT less food for us.

Another way that the world is coming into a food shortage, is that the fish supply is started to become dangerously low... I don't eat fish myself, but that is another really big problem.. I mean think of all the countries that their main food is fish.. Not only that but there are a lot of animals in the world that diet mainly on fish, and without fish, we also lose them...
Yeah, Georgia. They have water ya see but most of it is being pumped into Florida to maintain a "crop" of mussels! They are trying to get the government to stop the pumping of water to the mussels and pump it to the people who need it.

Does anyone get the 'Rolling Stone' magazine? There is an article in the latest issue (I got mine in the mail today) all about Global Warming. It was about 7 pages filled with facts from this one scientist. To sum it all up, all this bio-fuel and windmill stuff wont help us in the long run. The damage has been done and all we can do is move north, regenerate the plankton that cool down the earth, and hope that no power stuggles come about when this all begins in the next few decades. The article is crazy... but its impossible not to believe. Grabe yourself a copy and read it.

Ummm I don't think we can all move North... There isn't enough land in the North for everyone...
Sheep, be sure to read articles from the other side to get a balanced perspective on this issue. Rolling Stone is a very liberal magazine and therefor the content will be very biased to one side and try to scare people into thinking we are just basically all doomed. It seems you are very interested in this topic, so please educate yourself with all types of references related to this issue, not just Al Gore or Rolling Stone or what you are being taught in school. I'll try to find some to help.

The following link seems to be fun to explore. It gives explanations to errors found in Al Gore's "An Inconvenient Truth" (which I have not and will not see). It also has other great links at the end to more discussions about "global warming" and related topics (i.e. polar bears and "melting" glaciers).
I particularly like this last paragraph of the article...
quote:
As many as 35 serious scientific errors or exaggerations, all pointing towards invention of a threat that does not exist at all, or exaggerations of phenomena that do exist, do not reflect credit on the presenter of the movie or on those who advised him. The movie is unsuitable for showing to children, and provides no basis for taking policy decisions. Schools that have shown the movie to children are urged to ensure that the errors listed in this memorandum are drawn to the children’s attention.
anyway...like I said before, be sure to get a balanced perspective on this or any "hot button" subject. Don't blindly believe what you hear on the news or even in school.
love you!

I echo what Gidget and Paula have said. I wish I had time to go into this more, but you do have to look at all sides of an issue, sheep. When you do seek out the best sources and voices on each side of any issue, you begin to see that most issues are more complex than Hollywood or many politicians depict. Your teachers will also each have a particular viewpoint they may try to indoctrinate you with.
I will say this much--rock music and movies and teachers will generally present a more emotional and/or liberal point of view since those approaches lend themselves more easily to their mediums. I mean, how catchy is a song that says,
"Only have responsible, committed sex, Yeh baby, Spend 5 hours each month really teaching the poor the skills they need, OOOOOhhhhhhhhh Yeh, yeh, yeh!!!!!!!!!!! Environmentalist Hollywood stars and politicians should stop taking private jets around the world and shipping in exotic foods from all over the globe Lalala"
Here is another voice you should consider, sheep. Jon Stossel is a more of a libertarian, so he has a particular slant too, and he does distort some things, just as they all do, but he at least provides an alternate view to consider, and he tries to use his head as well as his heart. http://abcnews.go.com/2020/story?id=3061015&page=1
I just worry that too many people donate a few canned goods to a food drive or go to an "awareness raising" rock concert and then go home patting themselves on the back. Feel-goodism on any side isn't the same as really educating ourselves or really getting in the trenches to make a true, lasting difference on some issue. Ed Begeley Jr. seems like a famous person who is willing to make some sincere personal sacrifices instead of merely grandstanding. I like this from Wikipedia:
"Begley also is recognized for his environmentalism and his promotion of eco-friendly products like the Toyota Prius and Begley's Best Household Cleaner. A vegan for many years, his home is completely solar powered and he usually rides bicycles or uses public transportation. His hybrid electric bicycle often features on his television show, Living with Ed. Begley spoofed his own environmentalist beliefs on an episode of The Simpsons by showing himself using a nonpolluting go-cart that is powered by his 'own sense of self-satisfaction.'"
LOL! And bravo Ed!
