Declare Yourself was founded in 2003 by Norman Lear. It is a nonprofit organization whose main message is to encourage young people to vote and that their vote matters.

Declare Yourself is a national nonpartisan, nonprofit campaign to empower and encourage every eligible 18-year-old in America to register and vote in the presidential primaries and 2008 presidential election. Using the power of startegic media partnerships, celebrity spokespeople, the sports arena, and most importantly, mobile and Internet technology, Declare Yourself's campaign blankets the landscape of popular culture, as well as universities and high schools, with a simple, clear message: REGISTER and VOTE!

Sweet!!! I wished that the kids today had the same since of urgency that I had when I turned 18... The first thing I insisted on doing was registering to vote...

My "son" doesn't care to vote just yet. He isn't interested in politics and doesn't know enough to make an educated vote and doesn't want to vote just because dad and I say to vote and who to vote for. I have to respect that decision even though I don't like it. He's a smart kid (really smart) and when the time comes for him to get involved I know he will. Right now he is not interested. I don't want him to just vote to vote because being the smart a$$ that he is he might vote for the "wrong" person just because.

I do hope other 18 - 22 year olds out there who have the opportunity to vote for the first time take the time to learn and cast an educated vote.

I'm registered too Iris...and we offset each other. Wink

My daughter and I often cancel each other out.

There are links on the website for Declare Yourself that offer explanations of the parties, candidates, and issues. I can understand that it can all be very confusing. It's a good place for young people to start to familiarize themself with what the issues are and where the candidates stand on them.

In Australia, we HAVE to vote, it's not an option.

I am happy that the guy I voted for last year, Kevin Rudd is our new Prime Minister as he looks to be doing a lot of good for the world already, like speaking out against China's abuse of the human rights of the Tibetan people. It makes me feel good that someone I voted for is doing good and will hopefully make the world a better place. Smile

Cheers, Mikey Smile

You know as much as I think people who choose not to vote are stupid for not voting, I'm glad I had the choice to vote. I think that if you don't vote, then you shouldn't complain about the way things turn out, but I also think that it should be your choice to make, and not the governments whether or not you vote..
