…”We’re hoping to speak to the young people,” Vaughan said. He also noted that it has been a pleasure working with American Idol finalist Jeremy Peter Lewis who plays Jesus in the show.
“He is an amazingly talented man,” he said, really fun to work with. Vaughan then introduced the songs the cast would be performing, the first being more of a series of three songs - the introductory songs of the show…
That's a great find, Callie. I feel much more reassured now about quality of this production. After watching the movie version of "Godspell" and seeing its choreography and acting, I kept thinking, "Please don't let them turn Jon into a skippie hippie. Please don't let them turn Jon into a skippie hippie." Or a skippy hippy either.
Fortunately, the director seems to be trying to update the show: "Having done theater for more than 25 years, Director John Vaughan said 'Godspell' is a play that he has always wanted to do. Vaughan said he added as many contemporary references in the show as possible, rather than playing it as a period piece, which is more often seen. He said the movie was made in the 1970s and that it had a very 1970s style.
The arrangements also have a more contemporary feel to them, under the musical direction of Scott Smith."
Whew! Although it might be perfectly appropriate for Jon to skip with joy at some point, too much skipping just seems to turn Jesus into a character much different from the Jesus I read about in the Bible. Maybe this version of the play won't portray Jesus as quite so much of a 70's flower child.

But see Arts I am DYING to see Jon play a hippie! When I think about it, I don't really think I could go to a live show. I would be rolling so hard. I would probably end up laughing myself to death.
I agree with Kat! I would love to see Jon as a flower child!
He would have so much fun with that type of a role - and although Jon has a healthy spirituality, let's not forget how delightfully fun-loving and mischievous he is, which is why his fans adore him.
