Woot! My friends think I'm nuts now because I won't commit to doing things on Tuesday and Wednesday nights.

OMG This show did not just make me cry.. That was so sad and sweet at the same time.... That girl is an amazing person... (Temptress... sweet name)... My favorite person to go through so far didn't make it to the top 50 according to the spoilers thread...
This guy was my favorite.. And he is the only person that was on tonight that I remember the name of.. But he wasn't listed in the other thread... His name is Jonathan Baines...
Oh dear. That was most sad. Simon thinks it is odd to feel happy when a friend has a success. What kind of self-centered life must he lead? Why on earth wouldn't someone be happy when a friend achieves something? And really, I've felt happy when people I'm not especially fond of succeed too. Not always, since I'm not a candidate for sainthood, but I'd rather see anyone do well than fail, in general.
Surely this trait of rejoicing in the success of others is not a peculiarly American trait! I've been to England, and they seemed like markedly sweet people to me. One guy I didn't know helped me drag my big suitcase up some stairs in the tube (subway). All kinds of people were also great about giving us travel tips.
I remember other comments Simon has made about how the contestants are faking being sad or happy for each other. How empty would a life be if you couldn't mourn with those who mourn and rejoice with those who rejoice? I think this is why Simon seems so touched by people like Mandissa who have genuine love for all.

I think that Simon is just truly "affected" by all he's lived in his life. I don't really mean this in a bad way, it's just I think he sees the world differently than most of us. His celebrity lifestyle has a lot to do with that. Remember his reaction when he looked poverty straight in the face during the "Idol Gives Back" show? His reaction was a bit pecular, but I don't recall exactly what it was. I know he was profoundly touched. I think he has a great big heart in there; it is just often hidden by his ego and gruff attitude at times. He is one of those people who constantly has to have his eyes opened in order to comprehend things other than his own little world. Can you tell me he isn't happy for people like Kelly Clarkson, Chris Daughtry, and Carrie Underwood, whom he helped create their success?
About tonight's auditions .. strange, and good. yeah, that sums it up. There were a few I liked. I nearly changed the channel on that dude that got his chest waxed. He was gross and so was the stalker dude who wrote a song about Paula. The song was funny though, he was just creepy.

I stopped watching at Temptress. I really don't care much for the bad auditions, especially when they happen to nice people. Seriously, if I was that tour guide dude, I'd be whooping some co-worker butt. How mean. But I will be watching Omaha auditions becuase they're in, well, Omaha.
Ha... Jolie would go for the chap who resembles Ringo...

I remember... Simon's reaction was so extreme that I wasn't sure whether he was faking. He apparently didn't know that food banks and the type of families who needed the help of food banks even existed. Seemed a little overwhelmed by the whole concept.
Maybe he has the ego and the gruff attitude to protect that tender heart of his from the cold, greedy world he seems to see.
I was annoyed with the editing last night. The one uber-skinny girl with the pink dress sealed the editing deal for me. She had one earing on during the initial talking with the judges, then she sang and had two earrings then during the critiques she only had one.......hummmmm fishy! It shows me that the singing they show isn't always the singing they really do in front of the judges. BAD EDITING!!!

You didn't know that? They've done that since Season 1. Kelly didn't only sing "At last" in front of the judges. She started out with "Respect yourself" by Madonna. That's nothing new.
John Mayer // Elton John // Idols 08 // Daughtry // Jonas Brothers // Rascal Flatts

I also wonder if Simon is just referring to how American's react to things compared to the British. For example, the way some of them jump up and down and scream when their loved one gets through to Hollywood. He may be used to seeing people act to great news in a more reserved way. I think it varies in America, depending on cultures or how you are raised. I was watching Extreme Home Makeover Sunday and they had two families who got a new home. One of the families acted way over the top. Several times the mom and at least one of the daughters fell to the ground as if they had fainted and were screaming and jumping up and down in several scenes. When they were going through the house, they were screaming at every turn. The mom even "fainted" in the opening scene when the design team had just shown up to "surprise" them. To me, they were WAY over the top with all the screaming and yelling and fainting and falling on the ground and kicking their feet in the air. I almost changed it, like get a grip people. It can't be safe for them to constantly throw themselves on the ground like a child throwing a tantrum. I was really annoyed at all the fainting, jumping, wailing, and screaming. Anyway, not to derail this too off topic, my point is, us Americans all react to good news differently, either for ourselves or for when something good happens to our friends or family.

PremiereWatch: ‘American Idol’ Philadelphia auditions
On Jan. 15, the Idol Curtain descended over TV. Follow me, dear readers, as I engage in a twisty analogy. As World War II ended, the Allied forces — England and the United States mostly — greeted the Russians with decidedly mixed emotions. On one hand, they were all, “Ummm… Thanks for holding ground at Leningrad, Stalin. That was mighty heroic and the loss of Russian life really went above and beyond.” On the other hand, there was a healthy sense of “Ummm… Not to sound ungrateful, but if there’s any way you could avoid spreading Communism across all of Europe, we’d really appreciate that. But feel free to keep Poland.”
‘American Idol’: Is Show Slowing Down As It Enters Seventh Season? Fans Will Be The Judge
These are the awkward teen years for “American Idol.” Still the most popular kid in class going into its seventh season, the TV talent show sprouted some unsightly blemishes last year, critics claim, and lost its focus by chasing after the cool kids and forgetting about its old friends, the contestants. And a series of ugly breakups has made it seem like the love affair with a handful of “Idol” alumni is, like, over.
It’s hard to knock a show that has been #1, crushing anything in its path for a “Seinfeld”-like six seasons running. But the once-untouchable “Idol” juggernaut is, by the admission of its own producers and most famous host, due for some retooling. And it couldn’t come at a better time, as two former “Idol” winners, Ruben Studdard and Taylor Hicks, recently announced splits from their Sony BMG label homes following disappointing album sales, and runner-up Katharine McPhee ended her major-label run after one poorly selling LP.
Which begs the question: Might the “Idol” engine finally be slowing down?
‘Tis the season for American Idol pundits (myself included) and fans (yes, you!) to come out of the woodwork and tell the show’s producers how to improve a ratings juggernaut that crushes everything in its path. You know they love us for it. Alan Sepinwall from the Star Ledger makes a case that Idol would benefit from more screen-time parity for each semifinalist — since the contestants who don’t get shown before voting gets underway (i.e., Stephanie Edwards, AJ Tabaldo) are put at a distinct disadvantage — but producer Nigel Lythgoe has no intention of making that change, saying it’s his job to produce the best hour of television possible. “If they’re as boring as hell, I’m not going to show them,” he says. “Once they do something that’s interesting or good and we believe are going to excite the public, then we’ll put them on.” This, of course, raises the question: If a singer is “boring as hell,” why in the name of all that’s holy would he or she make the Top 24? Also, Nigel, great singing is never really “boring as hell.”
he nation’s biggest geek parade — known more formally as the “American Idol” audition shows — began Tuesday night with a spectacular array of the misbegotten. Fortunately, Beth Stalker, 28, of Grand Blanc wasn’t among the laughables. She became what appeared to be the only Michigander to emerge from the Philadelphia testing that was featured on the Fox network’s hit series Tuesday. Emcee Ryan Seacrest said 29 Philly hopefuls made it to the next audition in Hollywood.
But for those looking for the unusual and bizarre, it was a four-star night. Here are some of the night’s most bizarre entries:
Grand Blanc woman goes to next round on ‘American Idol’
The Flint area has another contestant “going to Hollywood” as part of the hit-TV, reality show “American Idol.” Beth Stalker, 28, of Grand Blanc, was shown auditioning in Philadelphia on the season premiere of “American Idol” Tuesday. She got two out of three yes votes from the famous judges, which was enough to send her on to Hollywood and the next round of the competition. Flint native LaKisha Jones made it to the final four of last season’s “American Idol.”
Last year at the American Idol panel at the Museum of Television & Radio’s annual Paley Festival, moderator Pat Mitchell (who also happens to be the president and CEO of the Museum) recounted the show’s achievements to that point, noting that the sixth season had so far broken every record on the books and that there was nowhere to go but up. The only panelist to leap in with a contrary opinion was Simon Cowell, who laughingly told her not to say that, that there were plenty of opportunities for the Idol momentum to slow in the coming year. Time once again has proven the wisdom of our Simon, as after that March 1 panel the season – which until that point had run like the smooth machine it usually is – kind of haltingly sputtered its way to a half-hearted finale that drew a lot of viewers but excited few. This listless end to the sixth season was reflected in the sales of the two finalists – teen winner Jordin Sparks and beat-boxing Blake Lewis – whose records sank without a trace toward the end of last year, and that wasn’t the only gloomy news in AmIdol land. Major labels cleaned house (as they’re wont to do) and jettisoned second season winner Ruben Studdard and both season five winner Taylor Hicks and his runner-up Katherine McPhee – and this isn’t even taking into account the disappointing returns on Kelly Clarkson’s third album My December or Fantasia Barrino’s second record.

American Idol: Philadelphia Auditions (season premiere)
What strike? An American Idol two-night four-hour extravaganza with no real competitive programming on opposite it? Sounds pretty status quo, though I’m sure FOX doesn’t mind the almost complete lack of original scripted programming on the dial. My obsession with the Idol started because my wife wanted to see all those terrible singers the FOX hype machine paraded on our TV screens before the first season. It’s had me ever since. Kelly, Ruben, Fantasia, Carrie, Taylor, Jordin and … Let’s roll up our sleeves and get this thing started so we can find out!

Why not.. Ringo was HOTT!!!! That guy is way taller than Ringo though.. And I thought he looked more like George...
