These reviews merit their own thread. Earlier, in another thread, I had noted Kathy Knox's positive review of Jon's Godspell performance in the Highland Community News.

And now, Darcie Flansburg of the The Redlands Daily Facts praises Jon's portrayal of Jesus:

"American Idol finalist Jon Peter Lewis (aka 'JPL') played a humble and sweet Jesus, which was more evident in contrast to Steven Merritt's dark and sinister Judas. . . .
[I've omitted some stuff from the article]
But what I truly love about 'Godspell,' obviously, is the music, and the Civic Light Opera cast belted out their designated songs with great passion and tremendous vocal talents.

I couldn't even point out a weak link in this chorus, because the ensemble vocals were the most magnificent aspect of this show."

Darcie Flansburg, who wrote this review, is an Inland Theater League judge and a member of the American Association of Theater Critics, so she clearly knows what she is talking about.

And for the sake of organization, I'll also repeat Kathy Knox's excellent review here:

"The key role is portrayed with genuine love by Jon Peter Lewis, known as JPL on Season 3 of American Idol. Lewis was in the 'final 10' alongside Fantasia Barrino and Jennifer Hudson and is now working on his second album."

This article in the San Bernadino Sun by Kristina Hernandez isn't exactly a review, but it shows why Jon was chosen to play the lead in Godspell. Basically, it is saying that Jon can sing and act and draw a crowd:

"When casting began, Stacy Hennon, co-founder of the Redlands Civic Light Opera, said she wanted to find someone to star in the production that had name recognition in the entertainment industry. This idea, she said, was utilized to help draw more theater enthusiasts.

Hennon said Lewis was a perfect fit for 'Godspell,' as the singer could perform all aspects of the musical."

Another review praises the singing in the Redlands Civic Light Opera's Godspell production and spotlights Jon in the lead role. The article includes another photo of the cast. Reviewers Jules E. Beuck and Rose Botkin-Beuck give the following kudos:

"For example, there are two revivals of classic shows currently playing that have leads of national renown. These are “Godspell” as presented by the Redlands CLO at the Clock Auditorium and “Camelot” as presented by Broadway/LA in UCLA's Royce Hall.

“Godspell,” which first opened in 1970, stars Jon Peter Lewis of American Idol fame as Jesus. Lewis took the role because it fit perfectly into his schedule as he prepares for a concert tour later this year. . . .

The ensemble cast, which sports veterans from other regional theaters plus a couple of folks making their professional debut work and sing well together."

The article also mentions that the Redlands production included a rap tune. I wonder if Jon sang rap or someone else.
