Did anyone see the first episode of Gray's Anatomy? I am really sorry I missed it, as residency is one of those experiences, probably ala boot camp, which is almost impossible to explain to anyone.....you've got to have experienced it. So, I'm really curious to see if the show gives any sense of the exhaustion, anxiety and exhilaration that are an intrinsic part of a residency.
Aside: Scrubs is really fun and funny, but it's not very realistic, obviously.
I watched again last night, and was very impressed. Although it obviously has a lighter side, there are some things about it that are very factual. I had to laugh because the resident gave her interns a speech very similar to one I've given mine in the past. And they show how difficult it is for an intern when s/he gets a patient who doesn't want them as a doctor. And the bit about turning the light on at 5 a.m. to examine your patient because you have to be ready for rounds at 6 cracked me up. I remember getting into the hospital at 4 a.m. on most mornings when I was on surgery, and hating waking up my patients.
Well DaaaZ, I'd be nervous about being a patient in a hospital run by residents and interns at night It's a real dichotomy. You have the attendings, who are some of the smartest doctors in the state or nation, and then you have the housestaff, residents and interns who have to learn on someone. So, if you need brainpower, you're in luck. If you need your blood drawn by a crackerjack phlebotomist or if you have an emergency in the middle of the night, you might be out of luck
I think House is entertaining, but it's much less accurate. First of all, I swear that every patient on the show has at least one seizure.......and in real life it's more like one in five hundred at most. And, he's got his residents searching patients houses and doing all sorts of odd things that are not legal or ethical. So, it's a much less believable show than Grey's Anatomy, but House the physician is pretty entertaining, and reminds me of a few crusty attendings I had as a student/resident.
Well Betts...now I'm even more nervous. I remember being in the hospital and having a nurse that was a little tiny thing, she had to get on a stool to change the IV bag. I had no faith in her at all, it was like a child was trying to take care of me. That probably was not fair to her at all, but when your not well, its hard to be reasonably. I had blood clots that went to my lung after the birth of my daughter...so I'm lucky to be here.
House is really a good character for TV. I sort of gathered that it wasn't very realistic. For some reason I can see how some of the women on the show are drawn to him even tho he is rude, sarcastic, mean spirited, etc, etc. Oh, and I learned a new word...dichotomy. I looked it up, but don't test me on it a month from now. hehe
Well, it's almost been a month DaaaZ And I still love this show. Although there is some exaggeration, it's still one of the best medical shows I've seen in terms of accurate portrayal of the interaction between residents, and how residency works. They all look way better after being up all night than I ever did, though!
It was so good last night...I think this show gets better and better. Betts, did you see it? My son walked in just at a weird moment in the story and asked me to make him a sandwich. He said WHAT are you watching?
I couldn't I had a bridal shower to attend last night, and was sure I'd get back in time to watch. However, the honoree was an hour late and we ended up staying until the show was over. But, I'm going to find out when it is on this summer and watch every rerun.
It is good!! Wow we got the EX-Wife at the hospital helping out. find out she cheated on him first. Then Burk breaks it off with Christina who is prego with his baby but he doesn't know. I think he may find out next week. but things are heating up.
To me it looks like she is going for abortion. but i think that Burk finds out or something so it might change. I hope she has the baby but i do understand her fear of it hurting her job.
I had two babies in medical school and one in residency. It would be extremely difficult to have children during residency without a support system, especially a surgery residency. I do know one OB resident who was a single mother, as well as a pediatric resident. I would guess either the father of the baby was quite involved, or their parents were. Surgery residents, back when I was in school, were on call every other night. They started morning rounds at 6 a.m., were in the operating room by ten, operated all day long and then starting making evening rounds about 6 p.m. Rounds ended by nine if you were lucky, and if you weren't on call, you went home only to have to be back by 6 the next morning. Not very conducive to motherhood. But I do know several married surgery residents who had babies during their residency, so it's doable.
Well I think it would be cool if she had it on the show! But you never know. She would or is as of now a single mothing with as far as we know she doesn't have family around so I guess we just wait!! But I hope she has it I think it would be a great add to the show.
well looks like she might have lost the baby! they didn't really say. all they said for sure was that she lost a tube?? but i am guessing the baby is gone. anyone know??

I'm pretty sure she lost it. I thought they said it was an "external" (ectopic) pregnancy. In that case would it be impossible to save it? Would it be viable?
As far as losing her tube, as long as she has one she could conceive again. One of my close friends had 2 kids with just one ovary and one kidney. (She lost a kidney and an ovary to disease)

Impossible to save it.....clever plot twist which doesn't offend opponents of abortion and yet allows her to continue on with her surgical residency! There are a few recorded instances of babies gestating outside the uterus in the abdominal cavity, but a fallopian tube is very small and ruptures when the baby is less than three months old. It is frequently life threatening if not caught before rupture. But if there isn't too much inflammation with the rupture, the other tube and ovary should remain intact and her fertility is only slightly decreased. Rats, wish I hadn't missed that episode. Still love the show.
