This is such a good cause it deserves it's own thread. Just by playing, you donate rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

www.freerice.com

It's an online vocab quiz. Watch your score increase in right bottom corner as you get more words right. From the site:

Click on the answer that best defines the word.
If you get it right, you get a harder word. If wrong, you get an easier word.

For each word you get right, we donate 10 grains of rice to the United Nations World Food Program.

WARNING: This game may make you smarter. It may improve your speaking, writing, thinking, grades, job performance...

This is the first time I played. I donated 1010 grains of rice by doing so. My score in the bottom right got as high as 40. (It's not 40%, it is some kind of vocab level.) You have to play just a little while to get a ranking.

Be sure to click on the links at the top of the page to read about Free Rice and what they do. In the FAQ it explains that when you play, the rice is paid for by the advertisers whose names you see on the bottom of your vocabulary screen. This is regular advertising for these companies, but it is also something more. Through their advertising at FreeRice, these companies support both learning (free vocabulary for everyone) and reducing hunger (free rice for the hungry). The website makes 0 profit from this.

"You have now donated
610 grains of rice."

Yeah. So, how many grains of rice are in an average bowl of rice?

I got up to 750 before it timed me out...Im working in between words...I guess it didnt like me taking so long. But man is that addicting.

I sent it out by email to almost everyone in my address book, so if you got it from me by email...sorry to overlap Paula. Smile

Thanks for sharing this with us Paula.

No worries about the overlap! I'm glad to see it go out to others and when I get it again in an email, it just reminds me to donate rice, and get smarter in the process!

Very cool, Paula!

And addictive. I've never seen half of those words. gemsbok = oryx? REALLY? Smile Some of these words look like they belong in 'Jabberwocky.'

I got 2500 grains of rice today. That works out to about a half cup, or 350 calories' worth.

Wow, that's great Iris!

I get a lot of them right just by looking at parts of the word and knowing what the root of the word means, or the suffix, etc.. and also by eliminating words on the list that I know have a different meaning. I've learned a lot too, as sometimes when I get one wrong, I look at the right answer and realize that I should have known that. I think the more you get right in a row, the harder they get. Something like that.

I look at the word parts, too. I recognize some of them from science classes... but a bunch of them I recognize because my grandmother used them. But some of them you just have to know (or guess!).
