'i' is a five piece band taking influences from The Chemical Brothers, Public Enemy, Sunny Day Real Estate, Radiohead, and Middle Eastern music. Guitarist/vocalist Scott Genereau describes i's sound as Brit-pop with Middle Eastern and techno influences (try Woe, The Nominonivore, and Jabbywalk): thebandi.com

10/3/05 JPLm Email Interview With 'i': Scott Genereau, Matt Sikorski, Craig Malone, Adam Chamberlain, Brett
1. What precisely does a Nominonivore eat? Should we be wary? No, really, I googled Nominonivore and got nothing but articles your album. What is it? Scott: The Nominonivore is a Demon, that we made up to represent "the power that people have over other people through sex, or religion" A priest or religious person has a certain power over you, (such as Muslim clerics influencing terrorism) and say a sexy/attractive person has over another human being, getting them to feel terrible if they are 'playing with their mind.' The Nominonivore maybe eats those types of 'sins' and or influences them. Matt: I made up the name of that song. I think it to be either 1) a dinosaur and yes it eats meat, or 2) an ancient tome that when opened and/or read turns into a dinosaur that eats you. Craig: Hi, I'm Craig, the drummer. A friend told me that a Nominonivore is a beast that devours all types of music. So be wary. And stay out of its way. Adam: It’s a monkey with 4 butts! Brett: A being that doesn't eat nothing.
2. What's your favorite song to cover? Scott: ”All Along The Watchtower,” currently at least Matt:Matt: “Tourette’s” by Nirvana Craig: My favorite song to cover is the classic by the Swedish singing group ABBA, "Knowing me, knowing you." Adam: “Poison” by BBD Brett: Toss up between “I'm Too Sexy” and “Paranoid”
3. Do you feel that ninjas are represented fairly in today's society? Scott: Only on realultimatepower.net - in fact they are probably over represented because everyone likes pajamas. Matt: The true secret society of ninjas reigns supreme unseen by us mere everyday-average-humans Craig: No, I do not. I actually have a two-foot high ninja living in my attic. Doesn't say much, but he's a wily sucka. Adam: No! Ninja's will never compare to Storm Shadow! or Snake Eyes for that matter. Brett: Absolutely not. Having to stalk around covered in shroud is not my idea of positive societal acceptance.
4. Do you like cinnamon rolls? Scott: I do like cinnamon rolls. Matt: Did you know that as of 4 years ago I think, the 2 most popular scents for women were cucumbers and Mike and Ike's licorice candy flavor? I wanted to make cologne for men with that scent. Yes I do like cina-buns with extra, extra frosting topping. Craig: I love cinnamon rolls. Adam: I like cinnamon rolls. I Love cheese! Brett: Cinnamon rolls are fantastic…maybe only slightly less than chalk.
5. I noticed you use a reverberator in some of your songs. I remember that from the 70's and I actually had one on my stereo and loved it! What, if anything, inspired you to use reverb in your music? Scott: Reverb is contained in every sound you hear, unless it was recorded in an anechoic chamber. We do use it creatively though. I am a big ambient music fan. Matt: Reverb is sweet. Reverb makes everything sound better. Reverb allows the particular instrument to be lowered in the mix while still being heard. Reverb makes everything sound more natural. Plus it reminds me of dark caves. Craig: Being a drummer, I possess no knowledge of anything technical. I can't even turn on a guitar amp. Adam: Reverb? Brett: Short answer for me is "spelunking", but maybe Scott should tell you more about that.
6. I read your bio, so I kind of know how you got together, but your music is so eclectic, do you have a hard time as a band agreeing on what sound to go for in a certain song? Scott: We always edit ourselves, but we have a certain 'style' we go for. It is hard to explain. Like white guys doing Public Enemy, with sung vocals, and a world influence. It has to induce mania in us. Matt: We are generally on the same page, except when Scott and me fight for hours about a sound that he or I don’t like and then after 2-3 hours of arguing over Squarewaves or organ sounds, we come up with a compromise that sounds better then I could ever imagine. Craig: While searching for the best sound in a certain song, one of us usually becomes bloodied. Or, after I pull the dart out of my neck, Scott has a drumbeat already made up. Adam: Yes, Matt is constantly giving us Oral Hershiser's and Sebastian Janikowski's!! This in turn affects the whole flow of the constantatious superfluation of the songs. Brett: Not really, because if we get 'uppity', Craig beats us.
7. Given the option of a romantic interlude, would you choose Cat Woman or Bat Girl? Scott: Cat Woman Matt: Cat Woman. I think I would like to watch the tail move around playfully for hours. I think that would be hot. Craig: CATWOMAN. I like to be scratched and licked. Batgirl would only mess up your hair. Adam: Cat Woman! Brett: Michelle Pfeiffer, Halle Berry, Alicia Silverstone…hmmm I need more time on this one.
8. Who is your favorite philosopher or favorite philosophical movement? Scott: I think Kant (not sure) because at the end of the day he started talking in generalities, which is what people base life on anyways. Matt: René Descartes Craig: My favorite philosopher would have to be Friedrich Wilhelm Nietzsche… because I've made sneezes that sound like his last name. Adam: Gottfried Wilhelm Leibniz (1646-1716) Brilliant guy! http://www.utm.edu/research/iep/l/leib-met.htm Brett: Carrot Top
9. When you were a child, what did you want to be when you grew up? Scott: A marine biologist, and a hockey player, and a Doctor Matt: Doctor Craig: Oceanographer Adam: An eagle. Brett: Strangely enough, a mechanic. Honorable mention goes to hooligan, ruffian, and superhero.
10. Are you familiar with Bruce Campbell, and do you consider him a legend in your own mind? Scott: Before this question was asked, I couldn’t put a name to his face, but now I Know. Yes he is incredible. Nothing less. For a man that has defeated the Necronomicon so many times, he HAS to get props. Matt: Uuuugggggg.. Evil dead, never saw any of them, but for some reason I have an aversion to those movies...can't explain it, I don’t know why?? Craig: Not Bruce, but the soup is mighty good. One might even be inclined to say “Mmmm-mmm, good!” Wait; is he the guy in Army of Darkness? If so, pure genius…THE NECRINOMICON! Adam: Great basketball player. I learned how to dunk from him. Brett: If that's the guy that invented soup…then I'm not impressed.
11. If you could meet anyone from history who would you pick and why? Scott: Jesus, to figure out if he is real or not. Matt: Ron Jermeys..Oh, I already met him...hmm lets see, depending on my mood either Einstein, or Mozart Craig: My great-great grandfather…to see if he could drink me under the table. Adam: General Jean Baptiste Donatien de Vimeur, comte de Rochambeau. Because he once traveled down Route 10, and slept at a place down the road from Bristol. The very same Bristol from which we are from. Brett: Hitler…to 'pants' him during one of his big speeches. Show all of his followers what his 'real' problem is.
12. Ubahvision? Help me out with that! What about Jabbywalk? Cool songs though. Scott: Ubahvision is a rip off of the Matrix, and Jabbywalk rips its lyrics off from the Divine Comedy, and Jabberwocky. Matt: Ubahvision, another made up word by me, well actually its made up by one of my friends when we were like 10 years old give or take a year or two. It is similar to laying on your back staring at clouds and making the shapes into pictures, except Ubahvision is the act of laying on your bed and seeing shapes in the textured ceiling. The song concept is very similar to the concept of the movie "Matrix" except Scott and me wrote it like 2 years before the Matrix came out...Jabbywalk from some poet that Scott got on idea from but the name eludes me at the moment. Craig: Ubahvision is what you see when you are making out with a supermodel from the Czech Republic. Believe me, I know from experience. As far as Jabbywalk goes....? Adam: They both mean that Matt’s lame. One has nine letters, one has ten! It’s absolutely amazing. if you take that nine and throw it out you got ten! Brett: Pass to Scott/Matt…I'm curious to the answer myself.
13. Matt: When and why did you decide to learn the sitar? Scott: Does the unusual sound of the sitar affect your vocal performance in any way? Both: What inspired you to use a sitar in your music? Scott: I have always loved the sound of it, and of Middle Eastern music, cause I get into the drones. Matt:Matt: I learned the sitar when Scott's grandma gave it to him for a present. I am self-proclaimed one of the top ten best sitar players in Bristol, possibly CT…lol I am a bit weird musically, and I love the semitones and odd scales of Middle Eastern music. I think it sounds really, really great. Also, the sitar was voted the sexiest instrument in the world! Craig: Matt likes Elios Pizza, Scott likes rum. They barf a lot. Adam: The sitar is a very sexual instrument, in which you have to make love to it for it to speak. Brett: Pass to Matt/Scott
14. Who do you think are some of the greatest musicians of our time? Scott: Nirvana, Radiohead, U2 (though not anymore) The Prodigy, Chemical Brothers, Kaki King, there are so many, I can’t answer this question. Matt: The musicians that I like to listen to that I think are really good are: Stravinsky, Nirvana, Radiohead, Peter Gabriel and Eminem (quite possibly the best rapper ever in the history of the world. He opened up a whole new meaning to rap when he first started making rhyming the FIRST syllable of the word popular)...bands that I don’t like which are really good are U2, grateful dead.... Craig: Anyone who sets aside time to practice their instrument. And who LOVES practicing their instrument. Adam: Huey Lewis, Herbie Hancock Brett: Stevie Wonder and Carrot Top
15. What was your favorite show as a kid? Scott: Scooby Doo Matt: 3-2-1 Contact or Mr. Wizard Craig: No question, Tom and Jerry Adam: PB Channel Brett: Although I don't think he had is own show (pfft, what a mistake) the correct answer is Captain Caveman.
16. Did you have any interesting nicknames growing up? Scott: Keg Matt:Matt: Doc (in college) Craig: I've only had 2 nicknames in my life: Stabone and Dough Adam: Fingers, Crazylegs Brett: Rog
17. Any cool scars? Scott: I almost severed my finger, and my head has one, not very cool though. Matt: I got a scar on my face that’s almost gone now. I got it when I was 2 running down the hall. My mom said, " Matt, don’t run down the hall", but I didn’t listen. I ran into the stair railing and ripped my face open. I bit through my bottom lip jumping on my bed, too, at age 5. Craig: No Adam: Yes, 162 stitches worth from a horrible kickball accident in the 70's. The 1870's that is!! I'm 232 years old ya suckas!!! Brett: On my pinky finger from my mom slamming my hand in a car door when I was 3 and a stub for a pinky toe from when I chopped it off on an exercise bike when I was 5.
18. Can you name your top five favorite rock bands? And top five guitarists?
Scott: The Doors, U2, Radiohead, Led Zeppelin, Nirvana - I cant answer this - Guitarists, Jimi Hendrix, The Edge, Kaki King, Eddie Van Halen, Andres Segovia Matt: Radiohead, Nirvana, i, Pink Floyd, Phish, Wylde Colon Scope, George Wanat. Craig: In no particular order: Rage Against the Machine, Nirvana, Sunny Day Real Estate, Dinosaur Jr., and The Doors Adam: Bell Biv Devoe, Kurtis Blow, Kool Me Dee, D-Nice Brett: Led Zepplin, Pink Floyd, Beatles, Van Halen, Winger - SRV, Pat Metheny, Jimmy Paige, Eric Johnson, Tiny Tim
19. So, is Connecticut cool? or is it just you guys? What do you do for fun there? Scott: CT is just like any other place, just more insurance- we do a lot of music, and drinking I guess (too much) Matt: CT is the biggest dump in the world, except of course for NJ, which is the armpit of America. There are a lot of movie theaters and diners, and the casino is about the funnest thing here in CT in my opinion. Craig: The only cool part of CT is the upper Northwest corner. For fun: Drinking and laundry. Adam: CT sucks!! This is also what we do for fun. Brett: Mostly us, but it's decent. For fun? Taxing things…uhhh…beer is pretty cool. We also have a couple nice casinos in CT (bless those Native Americans). And if you like trees…we got plenty. Oh yeah, kicking cats is catching on in the northeast. Also everybody, and I mean everybody, runs around all day long yelling, "The British are coming!" Most of our roads are paved and there is running water.
20. Matt, what is your favorite and least favorite thing about Scott? Scott, same question but about Matt. Scott: Matt is sometimes hard to get a hold of. My favorite thing about Matt is that he is very personable/easy going, and he can’t help but make you laugh, which are two very valued qualities towards real life. I also wish I had his easygoing attitude, because it is almost a certainty that Matt is always more fun, and having more fun. Matt: He’s a musical genius, the stuff he comes up with is just awesome, it boggles my mind.... least favorite thing, there is always a 25-30% that he will say the wrong thing at the wrong time to wrong person at any given time. Craig: I love them both and would instantly succumb if they would only ASK!!! Adam: His hair. The mole on his left cheek. Brett: Pass, not me.
21. What is your favorite flavor ice cream? And toppings... Scott: Soft vanilla – shots Matt: I like vanilla and cookies and Cream..toppings are butterscotch or peanut butter and Reeses Pieces. 24.What was your best celebrity sighting? Scott: Paris Hilton Matt: You tell me, either Billy Zane at the pickled parrot in Jamaica, or Pete Rose at Caesars in Atlantic City. Ima go with Pete!! Brett: Tiny Tim. He came into a music store I worked at and bought some Led Zepplin Guitar books.
25. Do you watch any reality TV shows? Have you ever watched American Idol? Do you like Jon Peter Lewis? Scott: I have seldom watched American idol, so I am not even familiar with THIS years contestants. I did go to his site though, and he does have an awesome voice, and he seems like a bit of a goofball which is a good thing in that American Idol type of area because I think one of the reasons that Clay Aiken, (and everyone else) are so boring is cause they take themselves too seriously. Matt: Lol…I love the unofficial site name (jonnythecockaroo.com)…that rocks...jon how much of a jerk is that Peter Simon guy or Simon whatever-his-name-is in real life? Craig: Do not watch reality TV. Rather watch horrible actors than real people. Not familiar with JP. Adam: JP Lew is cool. Brett: I watch a few reality shows, but not enough to remember many names.

27. What is your lifetime goal? Scott: To be happy, and to be strong enough to help as many other people as I can. Matt: Travel and see much of the world as possible. Craig: Just to live in a house and be content with my cats and dogs. Adam: Peeing for 66 seconds. Brett: Conquering the rest of the world…starting with anything that qualifies as an island…especially the ones rich celebrities own.
28. Scott, you do most of the vocals, right? I love your voice, what kind of vocal training have you had, if any? Matt, do you do any vocals for the band? Scott: I have had some informal training with an instructor, and with chorus at Hartt, but to be honest, I used to work delivery jobs so I could sing in the car. Matt: Yes, I do vocals on track #1, and live I do a rap song called Mississippi. It’s very dirty. Craig: Matt and Scott aren't the only ones in this band, you know. Adam: I was on Puttin’ on the Hits and Starsearch was I was a young lad, and I knew that my voice was awesome! I also pursued a brief dancing career, where I honed my skills. My vocal skills developed mostly from my time spent on the professional yodeling circuit. Brett: Matt is a phenomenal singer, but the Turrets really puts a hamper on the ballads.
29. Who do you feel has influenced you the most musically, artistically, and lyrically? Scott: Lyrically Kurt Cobain and Bob Dylan, musically U2 and Bob Dylan, artistically George Engel (from SSR. Matt: Self taught guitars..tried to play to Nirvana, Phish and Pink Floyd, so my style is kinda a cross between them somehow. Art I love Picasso analytic cubism The best, lyrically I like our stuff to be as vague as possible yet still have a lot of substance. That way our songs still kinda have a general unifying theme, but yet every person can take something different out of it. I'm more of a math person as far as reading goes..so what school of thought/style do I come from lyrically?? Craig: William Goldsmith Adam: Red Foxx Brett: That's a really tough question. I haven't the foggiest.
30. Who is your favorite of the Three Stooges? Scott: Larry Matt: Moe Craig: Can't relate to people who are supposed to be good friends, but are always hitting each other. Adam: Shemp Brett: Shemp, followed closely by Carrot Top.

38. Do you prefer doing concerts or working in the studio? Scott: Depends on my mood. Matt: Currently, I wanna play out as much as possible, but I love making new stuff in the studio as well. Craig: CONCERTS !!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Adam: Shows Brett: Concerts, it can be quite a rush. Plus, stage diving in the studio tends to get very expensive.
39. What's your favorite holiday? Why? Scott: St Patrick’s Day, you drink, and it Means spring is coming. Matt: 4th of July, beach, nice weather, day off from work, loud bangs, etc Craig: St. Patty's. Not like I need an excuse to drink, but a holiday made for it is a pretty good excuse. Adam: Chinese New Year. Cause it just makes sense. Brett: Thanksgiving for the weather…and Carrot Top
40. If you were a superhero, who would you be? Scott: Spiderman Matt: Superman, x-ray vision and flying, lasers out of the eyes. Craig: Handyman Adam: Cheeseman Brett: Self-Imposed Grief Guy

Adam: Go out in a blaze of glory. Brett: I'd rob a bank to fund a heist that would involve filling the Grand Canyon with popcorn.
48. What was the first album you bought for yourself? Scott: Ice T OG Matt: Public Enemy - takes a nation of millions to hold us back Craig: The Led Zep with Stairway to heaven on it. Adam: Sountrack to Beat Street 2 Brett: Van Halen 1984
49. Having lived and worked in Bristol for nearly 6 wonderful years, the name Scott Genereau sounds familiar to me. Why is that? Sadly I moved out of Bristol in 1999 (the year of your formation). I lived in the Federal Hill area, on Stewart Street. I worked at the health club Health Trax Fitness and Wellness. Do you guys know it? Maybe that is where I know the name from?? Were you members there? I went to visit friends in New Britain a few years ago and was able to drive through the town (Bristol). I can tell you I was really shocked to see a Home Depot right there in town. Are you guys happy with the growth there? Well, first off, are you still there? Where are you living now? I’m happy to see a band from Bristol on our site. Hope you guys do well. Thanks for visiting with us. Scott: We still live in Bristol, (Matt and me) Craig is from Bristol and moved to Plainville, and The Chamberlain Brothers are from Plainville. Scott went to Kingswood Oxford, and Matt went to Eastern H.S. but we knew each other throughout the years. Interesting to note in the last few days it has been very juicy here because we had a racist cop scandal, and an E. Coli infected water supply. The growth is not positive because it reflects the incorporating of the entire nation, with say Home Depot, Wal-Mart (yes we have one now) and all the big restaurant chains Ruby Tuesdays etc. The Health Trax if it was on Chippens' Hill is familiar to me cause I had therapy for my finger there when I almost severed it. The cool thing about Bristol is that it is basically culturally dead. It makes it tough for us) I don’t think that there is an artistic atmosphere in Bristol at all, and so we receive very little if any support from the town. For ex: The New Haven Play review happened first, and because it had a related newspaper in the Bristol press, we got attention there. (Bristol took notice because they were force fed an article from a New Haven reviewer) And they took the cool title away. "Epic Rock from our own backyard” You would have thought that that title pertained even more to Bristol, but they took out the title! And it was the exact same article. I am very glad that New Haven gets us when Bristol doesn't though. I am definitely embarrassed to be from a town with Racist cops. (Check it out online if you don’t know the story) Of course every place has some people who are more artistic or progressive, but as a whole Bristol is pretty non-artistic/cultural. Matt: I graduated form Bristol eastern high school in 1995, never been a member of that club but in know where it is, the Home Depot sucks cause it just adds to the already crappy traffic on route six. Yes, I currently live behind the Forestville movie theater, the house right behind it. Thanks for liking our stuff and thanks for these questions. I thought these were some of the coolest questions that I have been asked to date. Craig: OK I lived on Federal Hill for 2 years on Woodland St. I used to mow a lawn on Stewart St, a yellow 3 family (were you watching me?) My wife taught swimming lesson off and on at Health Trax. Whoa, I'm really getting freaked out here. Some say Bristol is slowly becoming New Britain. Having lived there since I was 6, I really can't tell that it is changing. I am done with Bristol...too many people walking the streets talking to themselves, but Scott and Matt love it. I now reside in Plainville, which is where our 2 other members are from.
17. Any cool scars? Matt: I got a scar on my face that’s almost gone now. I got it when I was 2 running down the hall. My mom said, " Matt, don’t run down the hall", but I didn’t listen. I ran into the stair railing and ripped my face open. I bit through my bottom lip jumping on my bed, too, at age 5.
LOL...as a mom of two small boys I could actually visualize that happening...lol.

Wow...you've lived so long, are you, like, a vampire? Is CT more fun after darkness falls? Do vampires like to gamble? Does being a vampire make Halloween more or less fun?
28. Scott, you do most of the vocals, right? I love your voice, what kind of vocal training have you had, if any? Matt, do you do any vocals for the band? Craig: Matt and Scott aren't the only ones in this band, you know.
*blushes* Sorry Craig, we love you too! I just didn't know you were also responding to the interview when I emailed it.
on that Iris, Adam and Brett didn't even answer my questions. No hugs for them.
Just kidding. to all of them for a GREAT email interview. I loved reading through that!!

Beginning at 9:30pm EST, 'i's album, "The Nominonivore" will be playing on www.newmediaradio.com, so you will be able to hear the full versions of all their tunes.
Since I may be the only one here who has the pleasure of hearing the entire album "The Nominonivore" thus far, I thought I'd share an excerpt from the album review I wrote to 'i' after hearing it the first time. It's a tad gushy, but I'm sincere about it all. Whether or not their music is your style, it certainly is THEIR style...lol...it's great to hear so much talent so well used.
I haven't even played "Guero" since I got it last Friday
I've just received your album, The Nominonivore, and am impressed at the way you have been able to take such an eclectic range of music and form it into such a tight set of songs....
....One unexpected thing that intrigued me is the progression of the album as a whole. It starts musically from an initial anger, pain, confusion, and disillusionment, which comes to a crisis point at Bring Hell. Then comes a period that seems to contain both quiet disharmony and spiritual exploration, followed by an awakening of understanding that we are at least partially responsible for the predicament we find ourselves in as human beings. Then finally there is acceptance and even...is it possible? an aching hope that maybe somehow things could change?
The lyrics...thumbs up to them on my quick once-over...seem to reflect this as well.
I have to say, I started the album over again as I was cleaning up my reflections and it's even better the second time. You've used your considerable skills to create an expressive and cohesive album that just happens to have radio-ready tunes embedded within.
