The Sketches are a band local to DC. They have a music video for their song "Pieces" on YouTube. I love the song, and the vid's pretty awesome, so I thought I'd share!

Yeah, Charlie's quite talented. Sounds great live too!
You know, I swung by The Sketches site just to see what this new "appartment 101" single was all about. They have what I assume is the entire Secret Alphabets album available to hear in the 'audio' section.
This is the best album I've heard in a very long time. The lyrics are great (surpassing my standards for awesomeness) and everything feels complete. You can hear the Beatles influence ringing. It's all rather arty and cheeky. lol
Turns out Appartment 101 is a song about missing someone who became a welcome part of your life, but whose name your didn't even know...
I hope your picture's in someone's frame somewhere. I hope that someone meets your stare-- yes I do. Though we never took the time to become friends, in the end I miss you all the same, a face without a name.
It was inspired by the Beatles song Eleanor Rigby.
Great song and video! They are really good. Their sound reminds me of someone or some band but can't think of it. They kind of have a retro sound and I like that.

Yeah, I kept thinking the same thing. I can definitely pick out some of the Beatles sound, but there's something else. When I first heard "Dizzy" (it's on their MySpace) in the Black Cat Club in DC I thought they were covering a song I knew... but it seems that Charlie Bernardo and possibly Tony (? confused about who he is) wrote it. Which is great, because that song is fantastic fun to dance to.
I can't figure out why they sound so familiar!
The band/Charlie got interviewed by DCist (a fab local blog) and had this to say about their sound:
Q: Charlie’s vocals are compared to Freddy Mercury, the Beatles and Bono, but are there any Cuban influences in your music?
A: Cuban music is very rhythmic in terms of percussion. The Sketches music doesn’t necessarily reflect that influence except in some of the phrasing in the vocal melodies and occasionally the more organic, stripped down acoustic songs, where the accompaniment is more similar. That being said, both of the Bernardo parents played instruments (guitar and piano) and traditional Cuban music has always played a huge part in our background. Buena Vista Social Club is in my top 10 records of all time, I have probably listened to it as much as any Beatles record.
...We tried to take ourselves less serious on this record then in the past, we really wanted to get back to those rock and roll roots-- vintage guitar sounds, straight ahead beats, great melodies, harmonies and choruses you can hum after hearing a song once.
Haha... they will if Charlie has anything to say about it.
Charlie had tryout contract with Warner, but it became apparent that they would drag their feet for as long as possible. It seems that's Warner's modus operandi on nearly everything.
